Entering Addiction Studies 1 on Monday afternoon, an observer might expect a quiet room full of serious faces – but music is playing. The professor is discussing Miles Davis, and his dog, Benny, is lying curled up under his desk. Students are smiling, conversing and appear at ease.

Black History Month is a time to reflect upon the works and achievements of black people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and Malcolm X – pioneers who fought for equal rights, respect and freedom. Is it our job as a people to keep those dreams alive? Yes.
New Pierce Web site hard to navigate
The highly anticipated, newly designed Pierce College Web site made its debut at the beginning of this semester. I was underwhelmed and disappointed. The Los Angeles Community College District mandated that all district Web sites use the new Content Management System.
Teaching by the least common denominator
Jim is a professional. He works hard every day to do the best job he can on any given project and his customers have reaped the rewards of his natural talent and the pains he takes for his work. Bob works alongside Jim; he’s unmotivated, not particularly talented and puts in minimal effort.
Getting on the ticket
The spring election is just around the corner and the Associated Student Organization is excited about what some are calling an “incredibly contested” upcoming election. With the release of the official list of students running for office yesterday, the ASO is gearing up for what it expects to be a busier campaigning season than last year, leading into elections somewhere between late March and early April.
Waiting lists get the axe
The new software that will do away with the “waiting list” enrollment process at Pierce College was discussed at the Academic Senate meeting Feb. 25. A handout that described how the new method would be more efficient was presented by Robert Martinez, academic policy vice president and William Duxler, physics and planetary science department chair.
Farm Market to re-open in April
The Farm Market at Pierce College will be reopening April 1, providing fresh produce for Pierce and the local community every day. The market, which has been closed since September, is stocked mostly with produce grown at Pierce; however, some items such as strawberries are imported from other local growers, according to market manager Linda Carberry.

Feb. 19 1:30 p.m. Someone reported graffiti on the walls of the North Gym restrooms. 5:30 p.m. Sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., a vehicle was stolen from Parking Lot 4. The victim left the keys in the vehicle. Feb. 20 1:20 p.m. In the Horticulture parking lot, a vehicle was damaged by an unknown object.
Ecosystems of Baja California
Marine biology professor Dr. Raymond Wells and a group of his students will be traveling to Baja California Friday to conduct ecological fieldwork in the wetlands of the Punta Banda. The students of Biology 11C, a course which focuses on the relationship between the climate, plants, animals and humans of any ecosystem, will be observing firsthand the activities of the wetland communities on this trip.
Season wrap for men’s basketball
The season has ended for the Pierce College men’s basketball team as they step off the court with two wins out of a total of 24 games. Despite winning their last game, which was against Cuesta College on Saturday, the team has not qualified to proceed on to the regional finals that will continue through March.
