A day of pampering

Six mothers were shown how much they were appreciated Friday morning by Norma Blaque, the owner of Blaque Studios, in a private residence overlooking Hollywood. Blaque created a Mother’s Day makeover event, where mothers were able to relax and be pampered for free.

Blaque was thinking of how she used to do makeovers for her late mother when the event idea came to her.

She placed a message on Facebook and told participants to enter by writing a letter of 200 words or less about why their mom should be selected.

Of the 29 stories entered into the contest, six were chosen and able to attend.

Marilyn Labonite, 54, was one of the winners.

“Nanay is the most unselfish person in the world. I want her to have a day that’s all about her, because she is always helping everyone else,” wrote her daughter, Carol Huyne.

Huyne said since her mother came to California from the Philippines 10 years ago, she has done nothing but help others. She cares for children during the day and in the evening she is an adult caregiver.

The makeover had a retail value of $125. Mothers had their makeup done and their hair styled along with a wardrobe consultation and photo shoot.

“I love the idea. I wish I could have brought my mother. I think that everyone deserves to have this kind of day,” said wardrobe stylist Phu. “Moms have the hardest job in the world, so they definitely need a day to just celebrate who they are and what they do.”

Chocolate-covered strawberries and an assortment of fresh fruits were served with champagne and mimosas.

At the end of their special day, gift baskets were handed out to the moms.

“I couldn’t do this for myself. I don’t have money to treat myself to things like this. I am glad my daughter did this for me,” said Susie Moreno, 54.
