1. Fees increase to $26 per unit

Enrollment fees at California community colleges will increase from $20 per unit to $26 beginning this fall.

Students who have their classes paid for by the Fee Waiver will not be affected.

To view and pay fees, visit the Student Information System at http://www.laccd.edu/student_information/current_students.htm.

2. New interim president named

Joy McCaslin, Ph.D., vice president of student services, was voted interim president of Pierce College July 30.

She replaces Robert Garber, who left his position to care for his son, Jesse, who was diagnosed with acute liver failure and recieved a liver transplant.

3. Multiple construction projects finish

Many construction projects will be completed and open tomorrow.

First, a new road will open, which leads to Parking Lot 8. The road, a continuation of Olympic Boulevard, can be accessed on the right side off of Mason, just past the new Child Development Center.

Second, the pedestrian mall, which has been closed since late April, also opens tomorrow.

Finally, the pedestrian walkway to the Orange Line will also open.

4. Winter session not canceled

The Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees left the decision up to the nine colleges if they wanted to cancel winter session.

Interim president McCaslin announced that winter session for Pierce wasn’t fully canceled. English, math and speech classes will still be offered.

5. Interim chancellor announced

Dr. Tyree Wieder was named Interim Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District by the Board of Trustees.

She replaces former Chancellor Mark Drummond, who stepped down in July.

Wieder will not be a candidate for the permanent Chancellor position. A search committee will form to select a new Chancellor by early 2010.
