Pierce College’s 33rd Annual Photo Salon is on display until Friday April 30 in the in the Art Gallery.
Photographers eligible for the competitive exhibit included students enrolled in Photography 10—Beginning Photography, Photography 11—Advanced Photography, Photography 20—Beginning Photojournalism, and Photography 21—News Photography.
“I think the range of student work here is impressive,” Assistant Professor of Photography and Journalism Jill Connelly said.
In order to have a piece of work displayed in this years Photo Salon was very competitive.
“We have more entries then we can display,” Assistant Adjunct Professor of Photography Roger Vargo, “Photos needed to be judged by staff. Once all photos were hung, [professional] judges come in and vote.”
Paul Myers, a photojournalist, multimedia teacher at Brooks Institute, and Photo Salon professional judge, enjoys photos that tell a story about humanity.
“While I was judging I looked for the picture that stops me,” said Myers.
Overall Myers believes this is an exciting opportunity for students to get their work out there “and at the end of the day that’s what’s important.”
Top honors went to Amber Rangel for Best in Show. Victor Kamont received Runner Up, and Gil Reigo Jr. was acknowledged with the Honorable Mention award.
“I feel honored and privileged to be in such great company in which I learned so much from,” said Kamont, a multimedia storytelling major.
Other categories included Best Portrait awarded to Lya Lynn, Best Photojournalism to Louie Heredia, Best Landscape to Jared Jorio, Best Studio to Robert Hovanisiom, and Best Creative Lorie Wheeler.
“I’m happy I [won] photojournalism 2 years in a row,” said Heredia, a photojournalism major, “It proves I’m learning something from Jill [Connelly].”
Sean McDonald, adjunct faculty, believes that the work displayed represents what Pierce College is all about.
“People have come in questioning if these are students work,” according to Monika Del Bosque, assistant professor of art and gallery director, “Which is really a question of the quality. [The students] should be really proud of their work.”
The gallery is located in room 3301 and is open to the public Tuesday April 27 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday April 28 and Thursday 29 April 29 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
