Justice Day to host sheriffs, FBI and others in the Great Hall

Numerous law enforcement agencies will be meeting with Pierce College students in the Great Hall today to discuss career opportunities in the expanding field of criminal justice.

“Justice Day,” an event organized by the Career and Transfer Center, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with representatives from the CIA, FBI, California Highway Patrol, and several others attending.

“We have a lot of students that are interested in criminal justice, and this is our way of highlighting the types of jobs that they can get into,” said Joanna Zimring-Towne, the Career Center Coordinator at Pierce College. “A lot of those students that are interested just don’t know how to enter the field.”

In addition to several branches of law enforcement, the event will also host members of the criminal justice departments at UCLA, CSUN, CSULA, and UCI.

According to Zimring-Towne, “Justice Day” is the first event of its kind to take place at Pierce, and is the result of a collaboration between the Career and Transfer Center and the Department of Justice.

“I think it’s a great idea because I help recently released inmates find jobs and new clothing, so I know how many different jobs you can get,” said Ramon Livingston, 28, a sociology major at Pierce.

In addition to meeting industry professionals face-to-face, “Justice Day” is also an opportunity to meet with other students with similar interests.

“It’s cool that Pierce is letting people that are looking to enter the field meet each other too,” said Livingston.

Zimring-Towne also notes that the Career and Transfer Center’s decision to schedule the event towards the end of the semester is advantageous to their objective.

“It’s the last week of the semester, and we want students to do something fun and productive,” said Zimring-Towne. “Ideally, this might influence their summer plans.”
