Open dance auditions for the fall concert was hosted at the Pierce College dance studio and North Gym at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Approximately 65 participants showed up to audition at the dance studio, and there were four judges to rate their performances in different styles like modern dance, ballet, hip-hop, jazz, folk dance, social dance, tap, musical theater, and dance drama.

“ Fall semester is usually folk dance concert,” said Marian Weiser, chair of the Dance Department and one of the judges “ But because of the renovation of the theater, we are going to do all of styles this semester.”

Anyone can audition to be in the concert not just Pierce College students.  If chosen, dancers are required to enroll at the Dance Production class at the college, however.

All participants had to fill out the audition form first and receive a number to be judged.

Participants had 10 minutes to learn their basic techniques from the choreographers before they were judged.

Weiser said wasn’t important how good the dancers are technically at this time, but if they don’t have that inner soul, “ They never be a dancer anyway, they are going to be a technician.

“Dancing is such a great outlet for whatever you are feeling,” said Aurora Rivea, 20, who has graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising who performed in the concert last spring. “ I am very excited, and I am happy to be back.”

Those who pass the audition will be called by Thursday.

“If I get it, I am happy, if I don’t, I don’t care,” said Andy Kawatra, who auditioned for hip-hop dance, “Auditioning and not getting chosen are part of the business.”

The fall dance concert will be in the Performing Art Complex Nov. 12  and 13, tickets can be reserved by phone from 818-719- 6488.
