HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, free testing, guest speakers return in March

The HIV/AIDS Awareness Week will return to Pierce College in March after it was canceled last semester because of a last-minute insurance requirement.

The Los Angeles Community College District waived the letter of subrogation requirement that “derailed” last semester’s event, according to Student Health Center Director Beth Benne.

“I’m thrilled,” Benne said. “Early testing and treatment are key to beating this disease. I couldn’t be happier that it is back.”

Not-for-profit organizations BIENESTAR and AIDS Healthcare Foundation will offer free HIV tests on-campus to staff and students. Guest speakers from Being Alive will present their stories of living with HIV to encourage students to get tested.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation will test on March 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dates and times for BIENESTAR’s testing and Being Alive’s presentations will be confirmed next week, according to Benne.
