During the winter session at Pierce College, when the majority of students are away on break, most classrooms are dark and silent. But this winter, 30 classrooms in the English, science and math buildings will be filled with the sound of drills and the smell of paint as contractors perform the first interior face-lift in more than 40 years.

Gov. signs bill, equalizes funding students
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a new law Oct. 4 that will give more funding to community colleges and replace Proposition 13 which was passed in 1978. The measure says that community colleges receive their funding from the state, not local districts as before.
Latino club renamed, shifts focus to faith
Latinos with a Purpose, an Associated Students Organization club at Pierce College, recently changed its name to Refuge. With a mission statement, “to promote our Latino culture and share our Christian faith,” they have decided to rename themselves to include everyone at Pierce.
$95,000 grant for Pierce
It is a trying time right now for America’s hospitals and in the eyes of many, they are falling apart. According to a CBS news report in January of 2003, American hospitals are in a serious crisis due to the severe and dangerous shortage of nurses, a shortage that can best be summed up by the fact that there are now over 120,000 open positions for registered nurses nationwide.
ASO re-establishes student court
Starting this semester, the Associate Student’s Organization (ASO) will be re-establishing its judicial branch, the student court. The student court has not been in session for more than 4 years. “The court would be there to decide how to moderate student issues and grievances,” said ASO president Abraham White.
Horse owners given 90-day eviction notice
With the Pierce College Equestrian Center set to undergo further construction this winter, the privately owned horses housed there are being evicted. Art speaker Kim Abeles will be speaking at Pierce College Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Art 3300 classroom. Social issues are the main focus and inspiration for her artwork. Her work includes sculptures, painting and photographs. “I like to do things the hard way.

High-demand courses added for spring
As the fall semester drops its last leaf and comes to an end, spring semester approaches with a new class plan. The official end date of the fall semester at Pierce College is Dec. 21, which for some students can mean winter break or winter session. As for the spring semester, which begins Feb.
New Voters Project
Opinions are like belly buttons; everybody’s got one. For U.S. citizens 18 and older, the government not only allows, but encourages expressing those opinions through voting. “The need for an active student voice has never been greater,” said Abraham White, Pierce College Associated Students Organization (ASO) President, “and [that] cannot be accomplished without more students getting out to the polls and voting.
