Without a king or queen, or much involvement from the clubs for a unique new arrangement the Associated Students’ Organization (ASO) planned for Saturday’s homecoming, few in attendance realized that the game was Pierce College’s official homecoming game. Cheerleading coach Jenny Johnson organized the 2004 and 2005 homecomings, and had planned on continuing the traditional event, complete with king and queen this year.
Year: 2006
To Whom it May Concern:
Although you reported that Peter Hankwitz included his personal opinions of gay issues, I wondered if it was really necessary to refer to him as a “gay Republican” in the heading above the column. I think the lead-in to the story would have been just as effective without the irrelevancy of the adjective appearing there.
Internationally recognized artist set to speak
Art speaker Kim Abeles will be speaking at Pierce College Nov. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Art 3300 classroom. According to Abeles, social issues are the main focus and inspiration for her artwork. Her work includes sculptures, painting and photographs. “I like to do things the hard way.
Difranco latest work borders on failure
Soothing, relaxing, jazzy and mellow describes Ani Difranco’s sound throughout her album “Reprieve.” “Hypnotized” the opener does just what it says. The song lingers the listener in and makes them feel at ease. The smooth sound of her guitar allows you to drift into relaxation and takes you into another world.
New play proves to be eye-catching
Because it was opening on a Friday night, Halloween weekend and after a long day of work, I was afraid it would be hard to try to grant the cast and crew of Pierce College’s latest theater production, “The Elephant Man” my fullest attention and objectivity.
Loss at Valley frustrates soccer
The Pierce College Women’s soccer team played frustrated in a 1-0 loss at Valley College Friday. The Brahmas came out of the gates shooting, with two shots on goal in the first two minutes of the first half. Most of the first half was played in the midfield as Valley kept the Brahmas from getting into the offensive zone.
A tough Tie
Bakersfield College held Pierce College’s Women’s soccer team to a 0-0 tie on Friday. The Brahmas had plenty of scoring chances in the first half, but they could not put in the back of the net. “We are frustrated and had our opportunities,” said Coach Adolfo Perez.
Gang member- turned student honors prof
History Professor Richard McMillan was recently honored by former student Mario Corona, 29, at the San Fernando Valley Faith Committee’s annual community summit. McMillan and several other teachers who helped inspire Corona, received a certificate of appreciation.
Yes, I’ve been here for seven years
I came across a quote emblazoned on the front of a T-shirt recently that read: “College. The best 7 years of my life.” To add insult to injury was the drawing of an overly gleeful middle-aged man accompanying the impertinent line. But if you’re like me, this quote, however relatable and sometimes embarrassing, is completely true.
V.P. honored for Enterprising work
Pierce College hasn’t always been the thriving, successful and economically established school that it is today. Recently honored with the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Service to the Los Angeles Community College District, Vice President of Economic Development Tom Oliver, former interim president from 2004 to 2006, helped raise the school’s decreasing student enrollment numbers and formulated an educated master plan to assist in the million-dollar deficit hole into which Pierce had fallen.
