Study focuses on Hispanic students
A study considering different goals to prepare Hispanic students for higher education was released Dec. 4 by Excelencia in Education, the Tomas Rivera Institute and the California Policy Research center. In 2005, Excelencia found that only nine percent of Hispanics in California held a bachelor’s degree or higher.
To keep football, we must do it right
To say that the Pierce College football team had a tough season would be an understatement. With only one win (the rest losses), the players have been plagued with a number of problems off the field, which likely contributed to their performance on it. The Brahmas began this past season with 0 wins and 10 losses in 2005-punctuating a 38-143 record dating back to 1988.
Campus technology program aids environment
You probably wouldn’t know it just by passing through the bustling hallways as often as you do, but not only is Pierce a renowned agricultural school, but a science school as well. Another thing you may find surprising is that Pierce has their own laboratory that is used to assist in crucial environmental problems, thanks to the Center for Environmental Technology, which works with the government to test new technologies that aid in treating such issues.
Botanical garden Phase II under way
The groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II of the S. Mark Taper Foundation Botanical Garden took place between the Mathematics and Life Science Buildings Friday. The garden is named after the S. Mark Taper Foundation, which is known throughout California for its donations and its work with various organizations, such as arts, domestic abuse and community development programs.
Learning online, ‘Moodle’ style
At its Dec. 4 meeting, the Pierce College Academic Senate discussed a new program for faculty called Moodle that will help create an easy and effective online learning system for students. Moodle only became possible due to Title III, a U.S. Department of Education grant in the amount of $370,000 per year for five years that was awarded to Pierce in 2002.
Celebrity hype killed ‘Bobby’
When I heard “Bobby” would be based on a legendary Kennedy brother, I was there, but on Thanksgiving Day no one else was! Unfortunately, Director Emilio Estevez interpretation of Robert F. Kennedy’s life was slim to none. The title “Bobby,” was not appropriate for the movie.
Oliver plans new job, trip to Paris, time with family
To most people, retirement means the end to a career but to a few, like Timothy “Tim” Oliver, vice president of administrative services, retirement means the beginning of a career. Oliver, who joined Pierce College in November 1999, recently announced his retirement effective December, to spend more time with his family and work part-time.
Tales from the farm:
How many of us can claim that we had a sow run after us all the way around the Pierce College farm because we stole her piglet? That was one of the most memorable incidents Marilyn Feldman,58, had about her college life at Pierce in 1957. “My friend and I were walking past the pig barn after class one day and saw that a sow was surrounded by her piglets,” said Feldman.
B-ball defense just misses
The fans were cheering as the Brahmas tipped-off their seventh basketball game of the season Friday against the Los Angeles City College Cubs, but later suffered a disappointing loss of 55 to 56. The first half of the game went to the Brahmas, who had a 12- point lead over the Cubs by half time.
