In the television show, “The Wire,” the often true-to-life stories have helped to make it one of the most popular shows on TV today. The series, which stars Dominic West and Lance Reddick, airs on HBO at 10 p.m. Sundays. It is often compared to cop dramas such as “The Sopranos” and is currently in its fourth season.
Pierce College defeated Santa Monica College to win the Western State Conference Women’s Soccer championship. The Brahmas have won four of the last five conference championships, losing only in 2004. “This is the most satisfying and difficult,” said Head Coach Adolfo Perez.
Umair Ibrahim attends school like any other student. He patiently rides the city bus, walks to class with a friend, does his homework and prepares for the next day. There is only one mountain that stands in his path; for Ibrahim, a driving force. He is blind.
While it might seem like there are more male faculty walking around campus, that simply isn’t true. At Pierce College, the faculty consists of mostly females. The percent of female faculty and female students is about the same. The faculty has 53.5 percent female and the students are 57 percent female.
Former Pierce College president Darroch “Rocky” Young will be retiring from his position as chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District sometime in August after officially taking the position July 1, 2005.
According to district officials, The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) plans to become the first community college district in the nation to generate all its own electricity. A Oct.17 press release said LACCD, the nation’s largest community college district, announced a precedent-setting plan to produce enough of its own electricity to take its nine campuses “off the power grid.
When Darroch “Rocky” Young announced his impending retirement last week, it stunned many people in the L.A. Community College District who had looked to Rocky to end the revolving door of high-level administrators that have constantly kept the district, and this campus, in flux.
While national surveys demonstate a continued discrepancy in the male to female gender ratio among college faculty, Pierce College is changing that trend. Thank you to an administration that has hired for the educational value of their instructors rather than for the traditional gender and ethnic stereotypes.
As they head off another home game on the evening of Nov. 10, the crowd awaited to see an intense game that held everyone to their seats. This wasn’t just another game but the girls’ volleyball team takes their team effort very seriously. They don’t win by luck, but rather by being each other’s support.
Where did all the cars and trucks come from in the Automotive Technology building? The Automotive Technology Department has 20 vehicles to use, all “for educational purposes… and donated from the manufacturers,” said Tom Rosdahl, a professor in the Automotive Technology Department.
